The Fascinating Story of the Origin of Diamonds

Posted on September 8, 2021October 18, 2021 By Sarah No Comments on The Fascinating Story of the Origin of Diamonds

Diamonds are one of the rarest and most beautiful gems on earth. They have a unique combination of hardness, luster, and rarity that has inspired mankind for centuries.

The word “diamond” is derived from the Greek root “adamas” meaning unconquerable. The history of diamond mining goes back to 3,000 B.C., when diamond deposits were first found in India.

Through the ages, diamonds have been used as a symbol for love, power, wealth and immortality. It is believed that diamonds were once thought to be tears from angels who had been guarding the gates of heaven.

The Fascinating History of Diamonds

Diamonds are one of the most precious and valuable gemstones on earth. The history of diamonds is fascinating because it reveals the ways in which these stones were valued by different cultures throughout history.

The earliest record of diamonds dates back to 5,000 years ago when they were used as engravings on jewelry items. From India to Rome, diamonds were an important part of fashion symbols for royalty, rich traders and noble people.

Diamonds weren’t valued merely for their beauty or rarity; they also had symbolic significance. Diamonds were rare because they could only be found in specific geological conditions, but many believed that this rarity made them more desirable than other gems like rubies, emeralds and sapphires regardless of appearance.

The Discovery of the First Diamond

The discovery of the first diamond is one of the most important discoveries in human history.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds occurred on July 26, 1725. The credit for this discovery goes to a farmer near Pala, India whose name was Jumna Dass. He found a piece of diamond shaped white rock while he was digging. This rock turned out to be the world’s first diamond.

How are Diamonds Made?

The diamond industry is an amazing success story, considering the gem only became popular in the 1800s.

Diamonds are created deep inside the earth, under intense pressure and at very high temperatures. They are formed over millions of years as carbon atoms are compressed together to form the hardest natural mineral on earth.

The three steps to make a diamond are:

1) mining diamonds from kimberlite pipes,

2) separation of minerals by density and

3) cutting rough diamonds into beautiful gemstones.

Conclusion – Why is Diamond Called ‘King’ of Gems?

The hardness and rarity of diamonds make it the most expensive gemstone on earth. The reason why they are called “King” of the gems is because they are also seen as a symbol of power and wealth.

Diamonds are considered to be the hardest gemstones on earth because they have such a high level of hardness. They also resist scratches and abrasions better than any other gemstone, which makes them incredibly valuable for jewelry like engagement rings.
